Many parents want their children to enjoy reading books, but at the same time, many parents are unable to achieve this goal! One of the first things you need to make sure you remember is that when children are told they "have to" do something, they have a tendency to push back. At the same time, however, children have a tendency to want to mimic their parents - enjoying the things their parents enjoy. You need to recognize that it will have to be their choice, not yours, if they are going to actually read and enjoy reading! Spend time reading when you are around your children, and in time you will find them wanting to sit around and read as well.

Treating reading as a "treat," rather than as a task or chore, is another way to encourage your children to enjoy reading. This can be accomplished in a couple different ways, but the first way - the way you can pursue even before your children can read on their own - is to read to them. When you do this, your children will begin to associate reading with a connection to fun and to special times. As your children begin to learn to read themselves, you can also "reward" them for good behavior by allowing them to read. One of the most effective ways to do this is to allow your children 30 minutes of "reading time" before bed if they have done all their homework and chores!

Wanting your children to read is an excellent goal, but you must remember that you cannot force them to do it, or they will be unlikely to enjoy it! You have to make it a treat, and you have to make it their choice.
